The South African Hole-in-One Society, together with The Golf Travel Company, is proud to present its itinerary for a golfing holiday to Ireland in August 2006. It is said that every golfer should walk the fairways of the Emerald Isle at least once in their lifetime and we hope that you will join us for a truly memorable experience. August has been selected as the best time to visit Ireland for a golfing holiday and with the Rand maintaining its strength against the Euro, now is the time to enjoy it!
This is what you can look forward to when you pack your clubs for Ireland in August:
Tuesday 15 August: Assemble late afternoon at Johannesburg International Airport where we have the chance to get to know fellow members of the group before boarding our flight.
Wednesday 16 August: We land early morning in London and catch our onward connection to Cork where our luxury coach and driver-guide await us. From Cork we drive through the beautiful Irish countryside to Killarney and check into our central hotel. This afternoon there is time for 18 holes on the accommodating Killarney Lackabane course, or exploring the sights, old pubs and shops of Killarney. As the sun drops over the nearby Atlantic, we get together for a pint or two of the local brew and dinner.
Thursday 17 August: Our first taste of golf on the Emerald Isle is the Arnold Palmer-designed TRALEE GC, which features cliffs, dunes and rugged terrain along the wild Atlantic coastline. Palmer describes the course as: “I have never come across a piece of land so ideally suited for the building of a golf course. I am happy that we have one of the world’s great links here”. No wonder TRALEE’S rating as a Golf World Top 100 course!
Friday 18 August: A truly traditional Irish experience awaits us this morning at Dooks GC, where golf has been played since 1889. Lying amongst the dunes of Dingle Bay and close to the whitewashed houses of Cromane fishing village, Dooks offers spectacular views of the coastline as well as a golfing challenge made all the greater by the Atlantic sea-breezes
Saturday 19 August: After the challenge of two days of links golf, today we head for a parkland course at Killarney, where we play the Killeen course, host on a number of occasions to the Irish Open Championship as well the Curtis Cup. The course is nestled amidst the serene splendour of the famous Lakes of Killarney in the shadow of the majestic Macgillycuddy’s hills.
Sunday 20 August: This morning we travel to Waterville, one of Ireland’s oldest clubs and a favourite of many of the world’s top golfers. The late Payne Stewart was captain at Waterville and his statue stands proudly beside the course. Less than one percent of all courses in Europe are championship links, and Waterville ranks amongst the very best of these.
Monday 21 August: Today we take a break from golf and transfer to our next stop, Kinsale, one of the oldest and most attractive towns in Ireland and considered the Gourmet Capital of Europe. Lying beside a small harbour, the town is filled with small lanes and shops, pubs and seafood restaurants. A true glimpse of Ireland at its very best.
Tuesday 22 August: Golf today is on one of the most talked about golf courses in the world! Old Head Golf Links. Described by many of those lucky enough to have played Old Head as being “the most spectacular golf course in the world”, the course is situated on a promontory which juts out over 3 kilometres into the Atlantic. No fewer than 9 holes play along the cliff tops and all 18 holes provide stunning views of the ocean.
Wednesday 23 August: All good things must come to an end, so today is a day to catch up on some last minute shopping or even a last round of golf before we head for Cork Airport. Along the way we stop at Blarney Castle to kiss Ireland’s most famous stone, before catching our flight back to Heathrow. Members of the group will have the opportunity to break away at either Cork or Heathrow.
Thursday 24 August: Our flight arrives in Johannesburg early-morning, and it’s time to share our memories of beautiful Ireland with all those unfortunate folk who were not with us on the tour. » Download the Itinerary & Booking Form... |
